About the Book

We are pleased to present this CBME-aligned textbook of Ophthalmology, specifically designed for undergraduate medical students. Each chapter is aligned with specific competencies as listed in the official undergraduate medical education curriculum.

The book has been systematically divided into five sections. Section A deals with basics in ophthalmology, which includes ocular embryology, anatomy, physiology and optics. Section B deals with basic optics & refraction Section C deals with clinical ophthalmology that covers ocular diseases. Section D incorporates practical ophthalmology that comprises history taking and examination, ocular therapeutics, diagnostic and investigating procedures in ophthalmology, ophthalmic instruments and OT sterilization. Section E covers community ophthalmology and a miscellaneous chapter which can help students to fetch better marks in final examination as well as various competitive examinations.

Dr. Chandana Chakraborti

Dr. Chandana Chakraborti completed MBBS from prestigious Calcutta Medical College and MD from Rajendra Prasad Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi. She has teaching experience of 20 years at multiple Govt. Medical Colleges of West Bengal namely RIO, Medical College Kolkata, CNMCH (Kolkata), NRSMCH (Kolkata), NBMCH (Darjeeling) and BSMC (Bankura). Professor Chakraborti is an examiner for both UG and PG for various State Medical Colleges. She is a passionate teacher and is involved in teaching and training programs with multiple ophthalmology organizations.

She is the Author of “Sure Success in Ophthalmology Viva Voce & Practical Examination” , a book for MBBS UG students. She has authored more than 75 research publications in reputed State, National and International level journals. She has authored two chapters in two different PG books. She is a reviewer of several National & International Ophthalmology journals. She is a regular speaker in various State and National level conferences. She has received various awards from reputed Academic bodies namely Sushrut Samman Award (2024) by Forum of Ophthal Teachers, Guru Sangam Gold Plate Resource Teacher Award (2023) by AIOS.

Dr. Nabanita Barua

Dr. Nabanita Barua has done her MBBS from esteemed LHMC (New Delhi). She has completed her Diploma in Ophthalmology from MAMC (New Delhi) followed by DNB in Ophthalmology in AHEC (Jaipur). She pursued fellowship (NPCB) in vitreoretina in RIO (Kolkata). She also cleared three steps of FICO with MRCSED Ophthalmology. She has worked as in teaching faculty in various medical colleges like CNMC, NRS, IPGME&R (Kolkata), DMGMC (Purulia), spanning over a decade. She also has worked as member of MEU and pursued ACME in KGMU (Lucknow). At present, she is posted as Associate Professor and HOD Ophthalmology in TGMC(Tamluk). She has various research publications in NMC recognized journals. She is Associate Editor of State Ophthalmology Journal (JOSWB) and participates regularly in various national and international conferences.

Dr. Sripurna Ghosh

Dr. Sripurna Ghosh is an Ophthalmologist with keen interest in Oculoplasty and Aesthetic procedures. She has done her MBBS from Bankura Sammilani Medical College followed by her Masters in Ophthalmology from North Bengal Medical College. She also cleared her DNB (Ophthalmology) exam. forthwith. After this she pursued her dream of fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery. She has been conferred the FAICO (Oculoplasty) Certificate by All India Ophthalmological Society. She has authored chapters in books from International Publishers earlier. She has also participated in State and National Conferences as Faculty and has participated as Guest Faculty for PG teaching programme. It’s her fervour for teaching students that has helped her contribute to this book which shall help undergraduate as well as post graduate students to upskill their knowledge and clinical acumen in Ophthalmology.
